Use knowledge and skills to solve societal problems; Dr Kiyonga urge

Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, the Member of Parliament for Bukonzo County West and Chancellor Makerere University, has urged individuals to use their knowledge and skills to solve local challenges affecting their communities.

Dr. Kiyonga made the remarks while presiding as chief guest at a thanksgiving ceremony for three members of the Kalengyo family who attained PhDs, doctorates in education.

The event was held at Mirami Church of Uganda, Karambi sub county under the theme “give thanks to the Lord, for He is good”.

He said true education should focus on providing solutions to community challenges such as food insecurity, land shortage, improving livelihood, and supporting education emphasizing that knowledge acquired at university should be put into practice for the benefit of the society.

The legislator encourages girls to remain in school and avoid early marriages, asking parents to provide basic needs to their children to prevent them from seeking support from unsafe sources.

While presiding over prayers, the Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese, Rt. Rev Nason Baluku encouraged young girls to remain in school and avoid early marriages urging Christians to respect God, noting that wisdom begins with the fear of Lord.

The educationists, Dr. Wilson Matembele, Dr. Godfrey Mugisa Masereka, and Reverend Canon Professor Edson Muhindo Kalengyo encouraged young people to persevere in education, remain faithful to Christ, work hard, and listen to their teachers urging parents and elders to continue guiding children and supporting their education.

The bishop encourages girls to remain in school and avoid early marriages, asking parents to provide basic needs to their children to prevent them from seeking support from unsafe sources.

The trio noted that attaining education does not necessarily require a lot of money, but rather commitment and determination from both learners and parents.

Members who celebrated the Kalengyo family’s academic success, emphasized the importance of families creating savings pools and joint budgets to support children’s education and reduce school dropout rates.

QUALIFICATIONS AND AWARDS

Reverend canon professor Edison Muhindo Kalengyo,holds bachelors degree in veterinary medicine,bachelors degree in divinity,masters of philosophy and doctorate in philosophy.

Doctor Wilson Matembele holds a diploma in secondary education from Kyambogo university,bachelor degree in education secondary from Makerere University,masters of education,administration and planning from Mbarara University science and technology,post graduate diploma and management from Uganda management institute and PHD in education administration and planning from Mbarara University science and technology.

Doctor Godfrey Mugisa Masereka holds- PhD in Eonomics -Makere University- Master of Arts in Economic Policy and Planning, Makerere University,- Bachelor of Arts in Economics, ,Makerere University,- Diploma in Education, Business Studies, Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo currently Kyambogo University,- Post Graduate Diploma in Public Admimistration and Management, Uganda Management Institute,- Post Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation, Uganda Management Institute,- Diploma Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation, Galilee International Management Institute, Israel,- Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), Kibuli Secondary School- Uganda Certificate of Efucation.(UCE), Saad Secondary School- S1 and S2 Nyakasura School- Mirami Primary School

Meanwhile, Thabugha Ernest Bwambale, the Kasese district education officer(DEO) observed that education standards and performance in Kasese District have improved warning parents against school dropout resulting from domestic work.

He also revealed that efforts to address understaffing in schools are ongoing, saying the move will help end the imbalance in teacher distribution and improve learners’ performance over time,noting that some schools have a high number of learners compared to the available teachers.

He adds that the government is also constructing staff quarters, especially in hard-to-reach areas, to provide accommodation for teachers even during harsh weather conditions.
