His Majesty Charles Wesley Mumbere Iremangoma, the Omusinga of Rwenzururu, has called upon tiktokers in Kasese district to use their platforms responsibly, urging them to desist from posting abusive and obscene content that tarnishes the image of the Kingdom.
The King made these remarks during an engagement at the Royal Palace in Kasese Municipality, where he and Her Royal Highness Queen Agnes Ithungu Asiimawe hosted a delegation of TikTokers under their umbrella organization, Worldwide Bakonzo United TikTokers.
While expressing his delight at the creativity and reach of the youth, the Omusinga emphasized that digital platforms should be tools for development rather than destruction.
He encouraged the creators to prioritize content that focuses on the preservation of the Lhukonzo language and the promotion of the Kingdom’s vast tourism attractions.
However, the King issued a stern warning regarding the unauthorized or disrespectful use of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) flag and other cultural symbols, reminding the creators that these emblems carry the dignity and history of the Bakonzo people.
Echoing the King’s message, Queen Agnes Ithungu Asiimawe challenged the youth to be ambassadors of the Kingdom’s potential. She noted that by highlighting local tourism sites, TikTokers could play a pivotal role in the Kingdom’s economic growth.
In response, Ms. Kabugho Evelyn, the Chairperson of Worldwide Bakonzo United TikTokers, expressed gratitude for the royals. She pledged that the group has fully embraced the King’s guidance to refine their content, moving away from controversy toward the promotion of culture and tourism.
Meanwhile, Minister of Information for obusinga bwa Rwenzururu, Hon. Kanyonyi Geoffrey, revealed that the Kingdom is preparing to petition the Parliament of Uganda to officially change the tribal name from “Bakonzo” to “Bayira.”
According to Hon. Kanyonyi, this move is intended to distance the community from the “bad history” associated with the current name.
The engagement marks a new chapter in the Kingdom’s efforts to bridge the gap between traditional leadership and the digital generation, ensuring that the Rwenzururu culture thrives in the modern age.
