KASESE — Farmers in Nyamwamba Division, Kasese municipality expressed relief and gratitude after local authorities handed over a high-capacity water pump valued at 7 million shillings. The pump, capable of moving more than 7,500 litres of water per hour, was presented to farmers from Kisagazi Village,.

Until now, communities in the area have relied solely on River Nyamwamba for water. During dry spells many households and farmers resorted to digging water trenches that divert flow from the river to irrigate their crops, a practice that raised environmental and sustainability concerns. Division officials said the new pump is intended to provide a reliable irrigation alternative and curb the unsustainable trench-digging.

Speaking on behalf of the farmers’ association, Mr. John Owe described the challenges the community faces, particularly in the dry season.

Pimako Kasereka, the LC III, urged farmers to use the pump responsibly and ensure it benefits the whole community.

LT. Joe Walusimbi – RDC Kasese, while officiating the handover of this water pump to farmers, he encouraged them to continue practicing good farming methods so they can maximize the benefits of improved irrigation. He stressed that maintenance of both the pump and sound agronomic practices will be essential to increase yields and income.

Local leaders said arrangements are being made for communal scheduling and basic maintenance training so the pump remains functional and serves as a sustainable resource for irrigation across villages near river Nyamwamba .

Farmers welcomed the move as a timely intervention that could transform farming productivity in the division.
