The Kasese Municipal Council has directed the Social Services Committee to revise its motion seeking approval to install a monument of the first Rwenzururu King, Isaya Mukirania, at Rwenzori Square.
Councilors noted that the motion lacked proper procedures, warning that approving it in its current form could lead to future administrative and legal challenges.
While presiding over the council sitting today, council Speaker Ukashi Mushenene advised the committee to first table a motion requesting a change of land use for Rwenzori Square, emphasizing that the proposal to install the monument should only follow after the change of use has been formally approved by council.
Speaking shortly after the meeting, the Secretary for Social Services, Herbert Bwambale, revealed that an earlier proposal passed by council on December 22, 2023 had recommended installing the monument at the main roundabout, However, the plan failed after the Uganda National Roads Authority declined to grant permission due to technical concerns.
Bwambale explained that the committee has now proposed Rwenzori Square as an alternative site, noting that the area has been earmarked for development under the Uganda Cities and Municipal Infrastructure Development (UCIMID) program as an eco-tourism park.
He added that the new location would allow subjects of the Rwenzururu Kingdom and other visitors easy access to honor the late king.
However, Kasese District Chairperson Erifazi Muhindi had earlier, on March 27, 2026, during the homecoming of the Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere, announced that space had already been secured for the monument at Rukoki Multipurpose Hall, a proposal that reportedly did not sit well with many residents.
