Authorities from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have convened a two-day workshop to discuss sustainable fishing practices on Lake Albert and Lake Edward, aiming to protect aquatic life, the environment, and the broader ecosystem.
The meeting, held at Movic Hotel in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, brought together key stakeholders from both countries.
Speaking during the session yesterday, the General Secretary of the Congolese Union for Fishermen, Kambasu Mukura Katsuva, emphasized the need for joint efforts in streamlining fishing activities and addressing illegal practices.
Kambasu called for stronger collaboration between Uganda and the DRC to ensure effective enforcement of fishing regulations, urging fishermen on both sides of the border to respect the law and prioritize conservation efforts to safeguard the lakes for future generations.
The workshop was attended by heads of marine security agencies from both countries, the Kasese Resident District Commissioner Lt. Joe Walusimbi, representatives of fishermen, and other stakeholders.
The meeting is expected to conclude today, April 9, with a community engagement session at Kayanja Landing Site.
