The Vice President of the IMS SDA Reform Movement Uganda Field, Wilberforce Kalisa, has encouraged communities in the Rwenzori region to embrace herbal and natural remedies as part of maintaining good health.

Speaking during a health reform engagement at IMS SDA Rwenzori district in Kasese, Kalisa emphasized that traditional herbal medicine has long been part of African heritage, historically used to manage common illnesses such as malaria and digestive disorders.

He noted that over time, especially during the colonial period, the use of herbal medicine declined as communities were encouraged to adopt conventional treatment methods. This shift, he said, contributed to the perception that traditional remedies are outdated.

Kalisa expressed concern that limited knowledge about proper use of herbs has led many people to overlook their potential benefits in promoting health. He urged communities to learn safe and informed ways of using natural remedies at the household level.

“Many people today suffer from preventable diseases due to lifestyle habits such as poor diet and lack of exercise. Even those who eat healthy foods must also adopt active lifestyles,” Kalisa said.

He also addressed misconceptions linking herbal medicine to witchcraft, stressing that natural plants can play a role in supporting health when used responsibly.

Health experts, however, caution that while some herbs may help in managing symptoms or improving general wellness, they should not replace scientifically proven medical treatments—especially for serious conditions such as accidents.

Nutritionists further warn against excessive consumption of highly processed and refined foods, noting that such diets can contribute to non-communicable diseases. They recommend a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Kalisa highlighted commonly known natural foods and herbs such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, lemons, and leafy greens, which are widely recognized for their nutritional value.

He called for continued education on health, combining traditional knowledge with modern medical guidance to ensure safe and effective care.

Important Note for Readers

Herbal remedies can support health, but:

  • They should be used with proper knowledge.
  • Serious illnesses require diagnosis and treatment from qualified health professionals.
  • Mixing herbs without guidance can be unsafe.
