As the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO) convenes its Annual General Assembly 2026, stakeholders gathered to reflect on four decades of impactful service to vulnerable children and communities across Uganda.

The First Lady and Patron of UWESO, H.E. Janet K. Museveni, was represented at the Assembly by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa .

The Assembly was reminded of UWESO’s founding mission, which began with a commitment to respond to the plight of children orphaned by conflict, poverty, and HIV/AIDS through deliberate action to restore hope and dignity.

Over the years, UWESO has grown into a strong national institution advancing child protection, education, and community empowerment, particularly through strengthening caregivers and community-based structures.

The Assembly noted the continued transition from dependency to dignified self-sustenance, anchored in empowerment, skills development, and sustainable community systems.

Participants were further encouraged to prioritise innovation in education, including bridging the digital divide and preparing young people for evolving opportunities, strengthening resource mobilisation to ensure long-term sustainability, and upholding strong values of integrity, accountability, and service in all interventions.

UWESO was commended for its continued contribution to building the capacity, character, and confidence of Uganda’s children and young people, with a shared commitment to ensuring that every child supported is given the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development. #OpenGovUg
